Probably better known for its dried fruit and hot springs the town of Montagu also holds claim to the first micro-brewery on Route 62, Karoo Brewery. Situated in the middle of the picturesque historic town of Montagu, a two hour drive from Cape Town, you will find The Mystic Tin. At the Mystic Tin you will find excellent food, great accommodation, warm and comfy atmosphere and beer!
Brewed on the premises this microbrewery offers 3 different Ales –
- Karoo Draught – An easy drinking beer that is very light in flavour.
- Karoo Honey Draught – Very similar to the Karoo Draught with a sweeter aftertaste.
- Karoo Dark Draught – A proper stout with strong flavours of roasted coffee.
All beers are 100% naturally brewed, unpasteurised and no additives or preservatives are added.
Tastings are for free and once you decide on which one will go down best you can order a 400ml draught for R22 and enjoy in the beautiful beer garden. While you are there you can just as well stay for lunch which I would highly recommend! Apart from some brilliant karoo lamb and chicken curries some uncommon and rather unique dishes such as ostrich burgers, ostrich meat balls and eland fillet are served for lunch, all of which go down even better with an ice cold draught!
